Tamil Nadu has witnessed a historic moment as 51-year-old Tamil superstar Joseph Vijay has become the second actor-politician to achieve electoral success within two years of forming a political party. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party swept the Tamil Nadu elections after its formation in February 2024.
Vijay's achievement is reminiscent of Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao's (NTR) quick rise to becoming the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh in 1983. NTR founded the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 1982 and went on to win 202 out of 294 seats in the elections held that year.
Vijay's campaign was extensive, complete with a van with a sunroof and public rallies. He described the ruling DMK party as an 'evil force', urging Tamilians to bring about a change in power. In his final speeches, he even stated that his campaign was designed to 'send the DMK government home', accusing them of corruption.
Vijay's achievement is a testament to his dedication and hard work. He has become the youngest actor-politician to win elections in such a short time, making history in the process.
