Federal investigators have retrieved the flight data and cockpit voice recorders from the Air Canada plane that collided with a fire truck during landing at LaGuardia Airport, resulting in the deaths of both pilots and injuries to several passengers and firefighters.
The incident marks the most lethal aviation accident at LaGuardia in over 30 years, according to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy confirmed that the cockpit voice recorder was undamaged and work on the flight data recorder is expected to begin on Tuesday.
The NTSB is optimistic that the devices will provide clarity on whether technical failures or miscommunication led to the fire truck being present on an active runway during the landing.
Homendy stated that the agency has a substantial amount of information regarding the crash, but must verify it before releasing it to the public.
