US President Donald Trump will pay an official visit to China from May 13 to 15 at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

This will be the first visit to China by a US president in almost nine years, amid a prolonged war in West Asia and increasing tensions between the US and China over a host of issues.

Trump will attend a welcome ceremony, a bilateral meeting with President Xi Jinping, and a state banquet during his visit.

The two leaders will meet again for a bilateral tea and working lunch on Friday, with the US planning to host the Chinese leader for a reciprocal visit later this year.

China has been flagging Taiwan as its core concern ahead of Trump's visit, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi telling US Secretary of State Marco Rubio that the US should make the right choice about the self-ruled island.

The Iran war and economic issues, including tariffs and AI chip regulation, are expected to figure prominently in the Trump-Xi meeting.
