A three-year-old girl died after being lured with a biscuit and sexually assaulted in Tamil Nadu's Thiruvallur district, allegedly by a migrant worker from Bihar.
The accused, who was originally from Bihar, has been arrested in the case. Police said the child knew the accused and was taken away after being offered a biscuit.
The incident has sparked a political row, with the DMK targeting Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay over law and order. Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin accused Vijay of failing to ensure the child's safety.
Former Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami also criticised the government, describing it as a "sham" and urging it to focus on maintaining law and order.
The case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and murder charges are expected to be added after the child's death.
