The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), a Kuki-Zo body, has withdrawn its blockade along two national highways in Manipur after receiving assurances from Kangpokpi district officials.
The officials promised to ensure the safety and security of Kuki-Zo villages and inhabitants within the district, as well as the safe transportation of essential commodities through sufficient security escort arrangements.
The Kuki body had imposed the blockade to condemn alleged biased security operations in the Leimakhong-Kangchup area, which led to ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities in May 2023.
At least 260 people have been killed and 60,000 displaced in the violence, which has left the state's Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities largely segregated.
