J.J. Spaun's first experience at Oakmont Country Club was filled with nervous energy, but he channeled it into a bogey-free four-under-par 66 in the opening round of the US Open. The 34-year-old American drew inspiration from his past experiences on the biggest stages, including a runner-up finish at the Players Championship. Spaun, who began on the back nine, made birdies on four of the first eight holes and closed with 10 pars, including several long putts and rescues from rough. Despite the challenging course, Spaun felt comfortable towards the end of the day. 'I like feeling uncomfortable,' he said. 'It makes me swing better.' Spaun is now atop the leaderboard, but he knows the course will only get tougher. He plans to approach the rest of the tournament with a 'nothing to lose' mentality, which worked for him at the Players Championship. With this strong start, Spaun is confident about his chances of a first PGA Tour title.
