The United Nations has welcomed a breakthrough peace deal between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda, hailing it as a significant step towards de-escalation and stability in the region. The agreement comes after months of conflict, which has left thousands dead and hundreds of thousands displaced. The DRC has long accused Rwanda of supporting the M23 rebel group, a claim Rwanda has denied. The UN Secretary-General praised the US for its leadership in facilitating the mediation process and urged the parties to fully honour their commitments under the peace agreement. The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, echoed the message, saying the deal offers a chance to stop the cycle of violence and displacement and focus on solutions that restore dignity, stability, and opportunity. The agreement marks a major breakthrough in the region, with the UN Special Representative for the DRC and Head of MONUSCO, Bintou Keita, welcoming it as a significant step towards ending the conflict.
