Israel has intercepted a civilian ship carrying humanitarian aid and international human rights defenders, detaining those on board, including climate activist Greta Thunberg. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition, which organized the mission, claims that Israel has no legal authority to detain international volunteers and argues that the seizure violates international law. The Israeli Foreign Ministry, however, stated that the passengers are safe and unharmed, and that the ship is being taken to the shores of Israel. The detention comes as the United Nations warns that Palestinians in Gaza are vulnerable to starvation due to ongoing aid restrictions. The UN's Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that the average Gazan eats just 1,400 calories per day, well below the minimum recommended amount. The organization has called for increased aid to the region, citing systemic and escalating violations of international human rights law and humanitarian law.
