Russia has officially recognized the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan, marking a significant development in their bilateral relations. The move was announced after Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko received the credentials of the new Afghan ambassador, Gul Hassan Hassan. The recognition is expected to boost trade and economic cooperation between the two nations, with a focus on energy, transport, agriculture, and infrastructure projects. Russia has also pledged to continue assisting Afghanistan in strengthening regional security and combating terrorism and drug crime. The Afghan government has welcomed the decision, describing it as a new phase of positive relations, mutual respect, and constructive engagement. This development is a significant departure from Russia's past stance, as it was one of the countries that did not shut its Embassy in Afghanistan after the Taliban came to power in 2021. The two nations share a complex history, having fought a nine-year war during the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan in the 1980s.
