The Supreme Court has written to the Union Housing Ministry, urging it to ensure the vacating of the official residence of former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud. The bungalow, located at Krishna Menon Marg, has been occupied by Justice Chandrachud since his retirement in November 2024. According to government rules, a retired Chief Justice is entitled to stay in a Type VII government bungalow rent-free for up to six months. However, Justice Chandrachud has been occupying a Type VIII bungalow, which is meant for serving Chief Justices. The Supreme Court currently has a sanctioned strength of 34 judges, with four judges not yet allocated government accommodation. The apex court is in need of the Krishna Menon Marg bungalow, which is the Chief Justice's official residence. The Centre has been requested to take possession of the bungalow without further delay.
