IPL 2025: Gujarat Titans Edge Past Mumbai Indians in Last-Ball Thriller to Go Top of the Table

Gujarat Titans (GT) climbed to the top of the IPL 2025 table after pulling off a heart-stopping final-over win against Mumbai Indians (MI) in a rain-hit encounter at the Wankhede. In a game that had multiple momentum shifts, GT needed 15 runs from the last over per the DLS method, and despite losing wickets, managed to scrape through on the very last ball.

With rain looming large for most of the second innings, the match came down to a frantic chase. Hardik Pandya, captaining MI, missed a direct hit off the final delivery, handing GT a dramatic victory. Suryakumar Yadav, visibly frustrated, signaled that the throw should have come to him instead as the Titans sealed a sensational win.

Earlier, GT were cruising at 68/1 at the halfway mark, slightly ahead of the DLS par score. But Jasprit Bumrah, relentless as ever, dismissed Shubman Gill with a trademark nip-backer, breaching the gap between bat and pad. Trent Boult and Ashwini Kumar chipped in with crucial wickets, putting MI in command as GT slumped from a comfortable position to needing 30 from the final 15 deliveries.

Rain intervened again, recalibrating the target to 15 off the final over. Rahul Tewatia started the over by smashing a boundary, followed by Gerald Coetzee launching a six. With scores tied on the last ball, Arshad Khan tapped to mid-off and ran. Hardik Pandya had a chance for a direct hit but missed, letting GT slip past in a nail-biter.

GT’s innings began cautiously after Boult dismissed Sai Sudharsan early. Gill and Jos Buttler steadied the chase with watchful batting until Hardik’s expensive 8th over, filled with wides and no-balls, shifted momentum. A dropped catch by Tilak Varma also reprieved Gill, though he soon fell to Bumrah’s sharp delivery.

Mumbai’s 150+ total owed much to GT’s sloppy fielding—three crucial catches were put down. Will Jacks, dropped twice, and Suryakumar Yadav, dropped on 10, capitalized briefly, but the GT spin duo of Sai Kishore and Rashid Khan tightened the screws in the middle overs. Kishore, with his variations and clever pace control, and Rashid, back to his fizzing best, applied the brakes on MI’s scoring.

Despite early promise, MI’s middle-order couldn’t dominate the spinners. GT’s chase wobbled, then stabilized, and finally turned chaotic—but ended in jubilation for the Titans.

With this victory, Gujarat Titans move to the top of the points table and continue their strong push toward the playoffs, while Mumbai Indians are left to rue missed opportunities, both in the field and with the ball.
