Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has warned that his country's close ties to the United States have become a weakness, not a strength. In a recent video address, he stated that the US has fundamentally changed its approach to trade, raising tariffs to levels last seen during the Great Depression.
Carney emphasized that Canada must correct its weaknesses and respond to the changing global landscape. He suggested striking new partnerships abroad to sell into new markets, citing the comprehensive economic partnership agreement with India as an example.
The Prime Minister also warned against relying on the hope that relations with the US will return to normal, saying that 'hope isn't a plan, and nostalgia is not a strategy.'
Carney's address comes ahead of renegotiating the Canada-US-Mexico trade agreement this summer and follows his speech at Davos in January, which targeted the Trump Administration.
