Former US Congressman Barney Frank, a pioneer for LGBT rights and a key figure in financial reform, has passed away at the age of 86. Frank, who was one of the first openly gay representatives in Congress, died after a battle with congestive heart failure. He will be remembered for his trailblazing work in advancing civil rights and his role in shaping financial regulations following the 2008 financial crisis.

Frank's sister, Doris Breay, described him as a 'wonderful brother' who was at peace with himself in his final days. His former campaign manager, Jim Segel, praised Frank's leadership on civil rights and his impact on the country during the 2008 financial crisis.

Frank served as a representative for Massachusetts from 1981 to 2013 and began hospice care at his residence in Maine last month. He had been suffering from congestive heart failure and had made history as the first member of Congress to enter into a same-sex marriage in 2012.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who worked alongside Frank for over 25 years, characterized him as a progressive and an idealist who was a mentor to many. Frank's legacy will continue to inspire future generations of leaders and advocates for social justice.
