Egyptian and Pakistani officials have been discussing efforts to launch a new round of talks between the United States and Iran amid heightened tensions in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, Pakistan's capital, Islamabad, has been under strict security lockdown for over a week as uncertainty continues over the proposed second round of talks.

Iran has made it clear that there will be no direct talks with American officials during the visit, with Pakistani officials set to pass messages between both sides.

US President Trump has ruled out using nuclear weapons in the conflict with Iran, stating that they have "totally decimated" the country without them.

The US has also imposed economic sanctions on a major oil refinery in China and 40 shipping firms linked to the transport of Iranian oil, in an effort to cut Iran's main source of income.
