Taiwan has sent its naval and air forces to monitor two Chinese warships operating near the Penghu islands in the Taiwan Strait, its defence ministry said.
China views Taiwan as its own territory and regularly sends warships and warplanes into the waters and skies around the island, prompting condemnation from the Taiwanese government.
Taiwan's defence ministry rarely gives details of Chinese warships' locations, but said a Chinese destroyer and a frigate had entered waters to the southwest of the Penghu islands, home to major Taiwanese navy and air bases.
Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te said China's 'grey-zone' operations and psychological pressure have grown day by day, seeking to manufacture a new normal that undermines the status quo.
The Taiwanese Coast Guard is on the front lines of monitoring Chinese activities and will be strengthened with integrated sea-and-air surveillance capabilities and expanded drone deployments.
