Actor Akshaye Khanna's portrayal of the ruthless Rehman Dakait in Aditya Dhar's Dhurandhar has garnered widespread acclaim. However, what's lesser-known is that the actor was instrumental in shaping his character's appearance, even rejecting his initial look. According to costume designer Smriti Chauhan, the original plan was to dress Akshaye in traditional pathanis. However, the actor suggested incorporating kurta-and-jeans ensembles to reflect his character's humble beginnings. This bold move paid off, as it added depth to the film's narrative. Chauhan recalled that there was a significant back-and-forth with Akshaye over the look, with several trials involving a pathani adorned with rich embroidery. At one point, Akshaye expressed his concerns, saying he wasn't sure if they were on the right track. Chauhan reassured him that the character's ruggedness was essential to his vibe. In a pivotal scene, Akshaye wore a black outfit while the rest of the dancers wore white, creating a striking visual contrast. Chauhan explained that this decision was inspired by the traditional Balochi attire and the need to make Akshaye's character stand out. Dhurandhar, which has collected over ₹607 crore at the box office, tells the story of Jaskirat Singh Rangi, aka Hamza Ali Mazari, played by Ranveer Singh, who infiltrates Rehman Dakait's gang to relay sensitive information to India. Akshaye's involvement in shaping his character's look is a testament to his dedication to the project. As the film continues to receive critical acclaim, it's clear that Akshaye's unconventional approach was a key factor in its success.
