The release of H Vinoth's highly-anticipated Vijay-starrer Jana Nayagan has hit a roadblock, with the film awaiting certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The uncertainty surrounding the film's release comes as the Madras High Court granted an interim stay on the CBFC's previous verdict, ordering the board to grant clearance to the film. Ram Gopal Varma, a vocal critic of the CBFC, has taken to social media to slam the censor board, calling it 'irrelevant' in today's digital age. In a scathing note, RGV pointed out that the advent of the internet has made it impossible for the CBFC to control the content that reaches the masses. 'With the internet, a 12-year-old can watch a terrorist execution and a 9-year-old can stumble upon hardcore porn,' he wrote. 'All of it is available instantly, anonymously, and without a gatekeeper.' RGV also criticized the CBFC for its hypocrisy, pointing out that the same society that freely scrolls through graphic violence on social media suddenly becomes 'concerned' when a filmmaker shows something in a theatre. 'This hypocrisy is dangerous,' he wrote. Mari Selvaraj, the director of the critically-acclaimed film Pariyerum Perumal, also spoke out against the CBFC's actions, calling them 'a blatant injustice.' He urged creators to raise their voices against the perceived threat to their creative freedom. The CBFC's certification process has been at the center of controversy, with numerous film personalities, including Sibi Sathyaraj, Ravi Mohan, Karthik Subbaraj, Shivathmika Rajashekar, Silambarasan TR, and several others, extending their support to Vijay. The matter is now scheduled to be heard by the Madras High Court on January 21. As the industry waits with bated breath for the outcome, the question remains: is the CBFC still relevant in today's digital age?
