In response to allegations of copyright infringement, Dharma Productions has dismissed claims that their Oscar-nominated film Homebound plagiarized author Puja Changoiwala's 2021 novel of the same name. The production house, owned by Karan Johar and Adar Poonawalla, claims the allegations are 'baseless and unfounded.' According to a statement, Dharma Productions was served a legal notice in October, which they have since responded to. However, they claim to have received no formal communication about the author's subsequent lawsuit in the Bombay High Court. The production house maintains that their film is an 'officially licensed adaptation' inspired by a New York Times article by Basharat Peer, with all necessary rights acquired and proper credit given. They are now exploring legal action to protect the integrity of Homebound, which stars Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor. Puja Changoiwala, the author of Homebound, had initiated legal action against Dharma Productions and Netflix Entertainment Services India LLP, claiming that the film misappropriated the title of her book and reproduced substantial portions of her novel, including scenes, dialogue, and narrative structure. The film, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May and has since been shortlisted for the Oscars. It is currently streaming on Netflix.
