Actor and politician Kamal Haasan has voiced his support for Tamil superstar Vijay's film Jana Nayagan, which was delayed due to a certification issue with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Haasan, a Member of Parliament, has appealed to the government to bring clarity to the certification process, which he believes is hindering creativity and economic activity in the film industry. According to Haasan, the current process lacks transparency and is undermining the Constitution's guarantee of freedom of expression. He emphasized that cinema is a collaborative effort between writers, technicians, performers, and exhibitors, and that the lack of clarity is affecting not just the film industry but also the livelihoods of thousands of people who depend on it. Haasan has called for a 'principled relook' at the certification process, which he believes should include defined timelines, transparent evaluation, and written justification for any cuts or modifications. He also urged the film industry to come together and engage in a constructive dialogue with the government to bring about reforms. The certification issue has been ongoing for Jana Nayagan, which was scheduled to release on January 9. The producer, Venkat K Narayana, had claimed that the film had been cleared for a UA 16+ rating, but the CBFC later sent it to a revising committee, leading to a delay. The Madras High Court intervened and ordered the CBFC to hand over the certification, but the board has since challenged the order. Haasan's statement has sparked a debate in the film industry, with many calling for reforms in the certification process. The case is set to be heard on January 21, and the outcome will have significant implications for the film industry and the freedom of expression in India.
