Mumbai woke up to a terrifying sight on December 25, as a massive fire engulfed the 23-storey Sorrento Tower in Andheri West. The blaze, reported around 10 am, left residents scrambling for safety. Miraculously, fire officials rescued around 40 people, with some being taken to safety from the 16th-floor refuge area through the staircase and others from a flat on the 15th floor using specialized breathing apparatus. The fire, which ravaged the electrical shaft and components between the 10th and 21st floors, destroyed three entire floors, including the 12th, 13th, and 14th. Notably, filmmaker Sandeep Singh, known for his work on films like Mary Kom and Aligarh, had his premises on the 14th floor. Fortunately, he was already out of the complex, having recently been discharged from hospital after hernia treatment. Friends Ankita Lokhande and Vicky Jain came to his aid, taking him to their residence as a precautionary measure. Firefighters quickly sprang into action, deploying four fire engines and other equipment to bring the blaze under control. The fire was extinguished by 11:37 am, but the cause of the incident remains unknown. As the city breathes a sigh of relief, officials are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the root cause of the fire.
