Jugal Hansraj, who starred alongside Shabana Azmi in the 1983 film Masoom, has revealed that the veteran actress maintained a distance from him during the shoot. However, this wasn't due to any personal issues, but rather a deliberate choice to enhance the on-screen chemistry between them. According to Jugal, Shabana was warm and friendly with his co-stars Urmila Matondkar and Aradhana, who played her on-screen daughters. However, she kept a certain distance from him, which he initially found puzzling. It wasn't until later that he understood the reason behind her behavior. In an interview with Pinkvilla, Jugal explained that Shabana's method acting approach involved creating a sense of discomfort between the two characters, which would translate to the screen. This coldness was essential to the story, and Shabana's portrayal of it earned her praise. Masoom, directed by Shekhar Kapur, marked a milestone in the careers of several young actors, including Jugal, Urmila, and Aradhana. The film, an adaptation of Erich Segal's novel Man, Woman and Child, also starred Naseeruddin Shah, Saeed Jaffrey, and Tanuja. In recent years, Shabana has appeared in projects like Dabba Cartel, a crime drama series, while Jugal was last seen in the third season of The Family Man, a spy thriller series.
