The Bengali film industry, represented by its screening committee, has written to the Kolkata Police, demanding strict action against individuals using social media to harass filmmakers and artists. The committee, comprising film federations, directors' associations, producers, technicians, actors, and actresses, expressed concern over the growing trend of online harassment on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. In a letter to Police Commissioner Manoj Verma, the committee highlighted how certain individuals have been using social media to launch personal attacks on producers, directors, actors, and technicians associated with Tollywood. These attacks often go beyond professional criticism and extend to family members, with obscene images, objectionable posts, and offensive comments being circulated. The committee noted that these online attacks intensify around film releases, promotional campaigns, or theatrical releases, singling out filmmakers and artists with indecent and insulting remarks. The language used in these posts is deeply offensive and has crossed all limits of decency. The sustained online attacks are causing serious damage to the social reputation of those targeted and having a profound negative impact on their personal and family lives. The industry is seeking exemplary punishment to deter such offenses in the future and restore a healthy and respectful environment. After meeting with Police Commissioner Verma and senior officials of the cybercrime cell, industry representatives expressed confidence in getting administrative support. They flagged issues like cyber harassment, manipulated film ratings, and circulating morphed images, and were assured of strict action. Signatories to the letter include producers, directors, actors, and technicians from the Bengali film industry, highlighting the industry's collective concern and demand for action against social media bullies.
