The A-10 Thunderbolt II, also known as the "Warthog," has been in the spotlight after a crash near the Strait of Hormuz. But how much does this US Air Force jet cost?

According to Military Machine, the A-10 Warthog costs approximately $18.8 million per aircraft, making it one of the more affordable combat aircraft in the US Air Force.

The cost has changed over time, with the original flyaway cost in the 1970s being about $9.8 million per aircraft, which is equivalent to around $18.8 million today when adjusted for inflation.

The A-10 is known for its relatively low operating costs, with a cost of about $6,000 per flight hour or $17,716 if all expenses are included. The annual operating cost per aircraft is approximately $4.5 million.

The A-10's cost-effectiveness can be attributed to its simple design, twin TF34 engines, and rugged construction, which reduces maintenance costs over time.

An A-10 Warthog fighter jet crashed near the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, around the same time an F-15E Strike Eagle was shot down over Iran. The pilot of the A-10 was rescued safely, but the incident comes as US officials search for one of the two crew members from the F-15 that went down in Iran.
