Activists detained by Israeli forces after the interception of a Gaza-bound aid flotilla have described their time in Israeli custody as a 'place of terror'.

Alessandro Mantovani, an Italian journalist, described the detention facility as a 'square of containers' where activists were held with little food and water.

He alleged that activists were assaulted upon entering the reception area and were taken into a 'panic room' where they were allegedly assaulted by three men.

The allegations come after Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir released videos showing him walking among some of the approximately 430 detainees.

World leaders have condemned the treatment of the activists, with many urging the Israeli government to take action against Ben-Gvir.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has formally requested the European Union to sanction Ben-Gvir 'for the unacceptable acts committed against the flotilla'.
