OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has stated that the rapid development and adoption of AI will not lead to a global 'jobs apocalypse'. Speaking at a Commonwealth Bank of Australia conference in Sydney, Altman said he was initially concerned about the impact AI would have on global employment levels.

Altman and his executives had been 'roughly right' on the technological predictions made by OpenAI when it launched ChatGPT in 2022, but they were 'pretty wrong' on the social and economic implications.

Altman said he was initially concerned about the impact AI would have on entry-level white-collar jobs, but now believes that the 'human part' of employment is irreplaceable.

He cited his own experience using AI to respond to messages, but reverting to answering them himself, as an example of the importance of human interaction in many jobs.

Altman stated that he doesn't think there will be a 'jobs apocalypse' and that the jobs picture is likely to be very different than previously thought.
