Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen was found dead in her home on April 1, just three months after her brother's suicide. Her husband, Stephen Bowen, is in police custody, authorities said.
Nancy, 38, was the first Black woman elected to the Coral Springs Commission in 2020 and was re-elected in 2024. She was appointed as vice mayor last November and served as Florida's Caribbean Vote Director during the 2024 presidential election.
The police chief confirmed that the case is being investigated as a domestic violence incident, but no more details have been provided. The city government paid tribute to Nancy, calling her a 'light in our community' with an 'unwavering commitment to others.'
Nancy's brother, Donovan Joshua Leigh Metayer, was a survivor of the 2018 school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. He died by suicide on December 15, 2025, after a seven-year battle with schizophrenia.
