Fifty Democratic lawmakers are backing a new bill that would create a body with the power to remove a sitting president, with the timing suggesting they are targeting Donald Trump.

The bill, introduced by Maryland Representative Jamie Raskin, would create a permanent Commission on Presidential Capacity to Discharge the Powers and Duties of Office.

The commission would be made up of retired officials, physicians, and psychiatrists, who would evaluate the president's capacity to do their job.

The bill is seen as a way to bypass the current process of requiring the vice president and most of the Cabinet to agree that the president is unfit.

The White House has strongly criticized the move, with a spokesperson calling Raskin a 'stupid person's idea of a smart person.'
