A former mayor of a city in Southern California, Eileen Wang, has entered a guilty plea to acting as an agent of China. Wang was charged with operating as an unauthorized agent of a foreign government within the United States.
According to the plea deal, Wang shared stories beneficial to Beijing at the behest of Chinese authorities without notifying the US government. She might spend up to ten years behind bars when sentenced on October 6.
Wang was the mayor of Arcadia, a city with a large Chinese American population. She engaged with the foreign government as an agent before being elected, promoting propaganda on the US News Center website on behalf of People's Republic of China officials.
Her former fiancé, Yaoning "Mike" Sun, is already serving a four-year term for the same crime. Wang is currently out on bail and awaiting punishment.
