Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was declared dead on Sunday by the Iranian government after a joint military operation by the United States and Israel.

Khamenei, who ruled Iran with an iron fist for 40 years, was killed in his office during the operation.

Until a new Supreme Leader is elected, Ayatollah Alireza Arafi has been named as the interim leader.

Several names have been floated as potential successors, including Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, Hojjat-ol-Eslam Mohsen Qomi, Ayatollah Mohsen Araki, and Ayatollah Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejei.

US President Donald Trump has shortlisted three names, but refused to reveal them, stating that the next Iran leader is 'not going to be anybody that we were thinking of because they are all dead.'
