Iran War Escalation: A Regional Crisis Unfolds

The Iran war is rapidly spreading across the region, with thousands of bombs dropped by America and Israel in the first 48 hours of the conflict. The attacks have killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader, and hundreds of ballistic missiles and drones have been fired at nine countries.
Iran has not held back, killing six American troops and coming close to inflicting casualties on British forces stationed in Bahrain. It has also targeted cities, airports, and energy infrastructure, with the potential for further escalation.
The attacks on energy infrastructure may have been warning shots, with larger salvoes and more critical targets possible. Iran could also attempt to mine the Strait of Hormuz, mount terrorist attacks abroad, or disrupt infrastructure by cyber means.
The Gulf states are growing increasingly irate, with Saudi Arabia and Qatar indicating their readiness to respond. However, there is little consensus on the next steps, with some preferring to act as a bloc and others considering individual action.
Europeans are also being drawn into the fray, with an Iranian strike on Abu Dhabi hitting a French naval base. For now, European countries are likely to stick to defensive action, but the situation remains volatile.
As the war escalates, America and Israel could yet choose to target Khamenei's successors or attack Iran's energy infrastructure, potentially drawing in more countries and raising the stakes.
