Hilde Lynn Helphenstein, the 40-year-old curator and satirist behind the popular art world persona Jerry Gogosian, has been found dead in a Sao Paulo hotel room. Brazilian police have opened a suspicious death investigation.
Helphenstein was discovered unconscious in her room at the Rosewood Sao Paulo hotel on Sunday, May 31. A plastic surgeon had been trying to reach her, as she had been in Sao Paulo for a cosmetic procedure.
The hotel staff reported that they received no response when they called her room, and upon entering, found her unresponsive. The police are currently investigating the cause of death.
Helphenstein, who had built a massive following online under the name Jerry Gogosian, had been a prominent figure in the art world. She had launched her anonymous Instagram account in 2018 and had become a phenomenon in art world circles with her sharp memes and insider gossip.
The investigation into her death remains ongoing.
