A 61-year-old woman lost her life in a devastating ski gondola crash in Engelberg, Switzerland, on Wednesday. Chilling visuals of the accident have emerged online, showing a small cabin detaching and tumbling down a snowy slope.

The incident occurred at the Engelberg-Titlis ski resort, high up in the Alps in central Switzerland. According to authorities, one person was alone in the gondola at the time of the accident and sustained fatal injuries.

An official cause of death has not been given, and the person's age and nationality remain unknown. The gondola belonged to local lift company BET.

Witnesses have shared possible reasons for the accident, citing 'extremely strong winds' that left the gondolas swaying. Wind speeds reached over 50mph, exceeding the usual wind speed threshold for suspending gondola services.

Investigations are underway to determine the official cause of the accident. The Rega rescue service had sent a helicopter to the area, and several witnesses recounted the moment of the accident.
