US President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran, citing progress on a longterm peace agreement. The ceasefire was announced just 1.5 hours before Trump's self-imposed deadline expired.
According to Trump, the ceasefire is subject to the 'complete, immediate, and safe opening' of the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil and gas route. Iran's Supreme National Security Council, however, contradicted Trump on this point, saying that the US has accepted Iran's control over the Strait of Hormuz.
The ceasefire announcement comes after Trump threatened a US nuclear attack on Iran, sparking fears of a wider conflict. Pakistan had proposed a two-week ceasefire, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif requesting that Iran open the Strait of Hormuz for the same period.
Trump said that the US has already met and exceeded all military objectives and is close to finalizing a longterm peace agreement with Iran. He also stated that a two-week period will allow the agreement to be finalized and consummated.
