US President Trump called off a planned visit by his envoys to Islamabad after Iran's latest peace offer was deemed insufficient. Trump hinted at chaos within Iran's leadership, stating 'nobody knows who is in charge.'
The US had announced that Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would be flying to Islamabad to hold talks with Tehran officials, but Iran maintained that no meeting was planned. The Iran delegation left the Pakistani capital without meeting US officials, prompting the US to cancel the visit.
Trump claimed that Iran's latest offer was 'not good enough' and that the talks involved too much travel and expense. He also stated that Iran had 'improved' its offer after he cancelled the visit, but still not enough.
The last round of talks between the two sides was held in Islamabad on April 11 and 12 and lasted nearly 20 hours but hit a stalemate. Iran's nuclear programme and control over the Strait of Hormuz remain key sticking points between the two sides.
