The United States and Iran are close to a peace deal to end the conflict in West Asia, but negotiations are ongoing over the details.

US President Donald Trump claimed the naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz was being lifted and a decision on an agreement with Iran would be taken soon, but Iran countered the US claim, saying no final understanding has been reached.

The two countries have reached a preliminary memorandum of understanding to extend the ceasefire for 60 days, but Trump's conditions for a peace deal, including Iran dismantling its nuclear capacity and opening the Strait of Hormuz, have been met with skepticism by Iran.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei rejected Trump's statements, saying Tehran makes its own decisions based on its interests and rights, and that the US maritime measures are 'illegal from the start'.
