US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has asked General Randy George to step down as chief of staff of the US Army, an official confirmed Thursday.
The reason for the request was not immediately known, but Hegseth reportedly wants someone who will implement his and President Donald Trump's vision for the Army.
George, who has served in the military for nearly four decades, is the latest senior military officer to be ousted during Trump's second term.
He is joined by General David Hodne and Major General William Green Jr., who were also removed from their positions.
This move comes as the US is engaged in a war with Iran that the president has indicated could last for several more weeks.
Trump has overseen a purge of top military officers, including the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and has ordered cuts in the number of active-duty four-star generals and admirals in the US military.
