The US Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), alleging a hostile educational environment for Jewish and Israeli students.
The lawsuit claims UCLA violated federal law by tolerating antisemitism on campus, pointing to an April 2024 encampment where Jewish students were allegedly attacked.
UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk rejected the allegations, stating the university has taken concrete steps to combat antisemitism, including recruiting a campus safety officer and strengthening policies to protect free expression and campus safety.
The lawsuit is the latest in a series of legal actions taken by the Trump administration to crack down on perceived antisemitism at US universities, following the 2023 Israel-Gaza war.
