US Senator Jim Risch has welcomed the recent US-India trade deal, citing opportunities in the nuclear sector. Despite tensions in the US-India relationship, Risch emphasized Washington's desire for a close relationship with India. He expressed skepticism about a revival in US-Pakistan ties and stated that America would not interfere in India's relations with Russia. However, Risch noted that Washington will continue to pressure India to prevent the purchase of Russian oil, even with tariffs. In an exclusive interview, Risch discussed the US-India trade agreement, the impact of the Supreme Court's ruling on tariffs, and the US's stance on India's relations with Russia and Pakistan.
Risch highlighted the benefits of the trade deal, particularly in the nuclear sector, where the US can compete with Chinese, Russian, and French companies. He acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding tariffs but emphasized that the US and India can work out an agreement. Risch also addressed concerns about the US-India relationship, stating that Washington values its partnership with India due to their shared democratic values.
The Senator expressed concerns about India's purchase of Russian oil, citing its contribution to the war in Ukraine. He noted that the US will continue to pressure India to buy oil from more stable and reliable sources. Risch also discussed the US's relationship with Pakistan, describing it as complicated and not significantly different from what it was before the conflict between India and Pakistan.
In terms of dealing with the rise of China, Risch emphasized the need for a defence relationship with India, citing the importance of semiconductor technology and defence stability. He stated that the US wants to benefit both parties in the relationship and avoid aggravating China.
