The United States plans to significantly reduce its military capabilities available to assist European allies during a crisis, according to a report by German news outlet Spiegel.
The move comes at a time of mounting strain within the NATO alliance, with several European countries fearing further reductions in US military commitments to the region.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized European allies for inadequate defense spending and has pledged to withdraw thousands of troops from Germany.
The proposed changes include reducing the number of US fighter jets available to NATO by a third, cutting the number of strategic bombers in half, and making fewer destroyers available to the alliance.
The US would also significantly reduce the number of armed drones it provides and no longer plans to supply submarines to NATO.
European countries would need to supply their own reconnaissance drones under the proposed changes.
The US is expected to present further details during a force generation conference scheduled for early June.
