The US has announced the drawdown of 5,000 troops from Germany, its largest European base, amidst strained ties with NATO allies. The move comes days after US President Donald Trump sparred with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over Washington's exit strategy in the Middle East.

The timing of the troop exit is interesting, as it hints at a shift in Washington's allegiance with other countries, especially NATO allies in Europe. The US has ordered the drawdown of roughly 5,000 troops from Germany over the next year, which would be 14% of the 36,000 American service members stationed there.

The US military is spread over 31 permanent bases and a further 19 military sites in Europe. The Pentagon said the decision follows a thorough review of the Department's force posture in Europe and is in recognition of theater requirements and conditions on the ground.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius termed the Pentagon move as “foreseeable” and said the European allies needed to adjust their defense postures. He added that the presence of American soldiers in Europe, and especially in Germany, is in their interest and in the interest of the US.
