Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Monday clarified his recent remarks about the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), stating that they had been 'misrepresented' by the media. In a statement, Pawar clarified that his comments were taken out of context and did not contain any allegations against the ruling alliance. He emphasized that the Maharashtra government is functioning effectively under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Pawar claimed that only selective portions of his remarks were aired, news agency ANI reported. The clarification comes amid reports of tensions between Pawar and the BJP. In a recent statement, Pawar had criticized the BJP's governance record in the Pimpri-Chinchwad civic polls, accusing the party of plunging the civic body into debt and mismanagement during its rule. Pawar also defended his party's decision to give tickets to candidates with criminal backgrounds for the upcoming civic polls, saying that he himself faced allegations of orchestrating a ₹70,000 crore irrigation scam. He questioned how a person can be labelled guilty even before it is proved. Additionally, Pawar blamed the BJP's local leadership for delayed infrastructure projects in Pune, alleging that despite having a clear majority in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), the party failed to deliver on key civic works. He claimed that the central and state governments have given sufficient funds to the PMC, but the local leadership has failed to utilise them. The clarification from Pawar comes as the NCP is set to contest the Pimpri-Chinchwad civic polls alongside its estranged uncle Sharad Pawar's NCP. The BJP has hit back at Ajit Pawar over corruption allegations, with Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol accusing the NCP of fielding candidates with criminal links.
