The Lok Sabha has passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, solidifying Amaravati's status as the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh.

The bill, which garnered support from both treasury and opposition benches, faced opposition from the YSR Congress Party, who staged a walkout in protest.

Upon becoming law, Amaravati will be recognized as the permanent capital of Andhra Pradesh, effective June 2, 2024, with no possibility of further changes.

The bill's passage marks a significant step towards the future of the state, fulfilling the long-held dream of Telugu Desam Party leader and former Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

Amaravati's status as the sole capital has been a contentious issue since Andhra Pradesh's split from Telangana in 2014, with the state vying for a permanent and stable capital for over a decade.

The new amendment bill aims to clarify any ambiguity over Andhra Pradesh's capital under central law, reinforcing Amaravati's status as the sole capital.
