Union Home Minister Amit Shah has emphasized the need for adequate facilities within the country for Indian students to pursue medical studies, rather than going abroad. Shah made the statement while inaugurating the Pragjyotishpur Medical College and Hospital in Guwahati, Assam.
He noted that many Indian students travel to countries like Russia and Ukraine for medical studies but often return mid-course, and instead, suggested that students should be able to study and treat patients in India and globally.
Shah also laid the foundation stones for eight projects worth ₹2,092 crore, including three super-speciality hospitals, a 'swasthya bhawan', and a district hospital, in addition to the Pragjyotishpur Medical College and Hospital.
He accused the previous Congress government in Assam of siphoning away ₹150 crore annually, allegedly treating fictitious children, and stated that the BJP has increased the annual health budget for Assam from ₹4,000 crore to ₹9,000 crore.
Shah also highlighted the improvement in healthcare infrastructure in Assam, including an increase in medical colleges from six to 14 and cancer hospitals from two to 14, as well as a decrease in maternal and infant mortality rates.
