Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has issued a directive to all districts to identify and deport suspected illegal immigrants. As per the Immigrants Act, 1950, district commissioners will issue expulsion orders, and the police or BSF will escort the individuals to the border. This move aims to tackle alleged illegal immigration from neighboring countries. Sarma emphasized that direct action will be taken against suspected individuals, with the government already invoking the Act to identify and deport infiltrators. The state cabinet had approved the framing of a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) in September to guide district officials in expelling illegal migrants. Under the SOP, district officials will direct suspected individuals to produce evidence of their citizenship within 10 days. If the evidence is insufficient, the official will record their opinion and pass an expulsion order. Those declared foreigners by the Foreigners' Tribunals will also face expulsion. Once a person is identified as an illegal immigrant, they will be referred to the police for biometric data capture and demographic details on the Foreigners Identification Portal. If they fail to remove themselves, they may be detained or handed over to the BSF for expulsion. The Act also allows for immediate pushback of detected immigrants near the border or within 12 hours of entry into the state.
