The Election Commission is announcing results for Assam's 126 legislative assembly seats, with the BJP-led NDA seeking a third consecutive term. The state saw a voter turnout of 84.42 per cent in a single phase on April 9, 2026. The BJP is facing a challenge from the Congress, which is attempting to reclaim power after a decade.
Dispur, a key seat, will be an interesting contest to watch, with the NDA fielding Pradyut Bordoloi, a former Congress member who joined the BJP just ahead of the elections. The last state elections in 2021 saw the incumbent BJP-led NDA retaining power with 75 seats.
The high-stakes Assam assembly election is a direct contest between the Sarma-led NDA government and the opposition Congress led by Gaurav Gogoi. The ruling BJP has raised the pitch around identity politics, security, indigenous rights, and economic growth, while the Congress accused the ruling government of trying to polarise the state.
Today's election results will reveal how voters in the assembly seats of Jorhat, Dispur, and Binnakandi and the rest of the state respond to the key issues raised during high-pitch campaigns.
According to initial results, in Palasbari, Himangshu Shekhar Baishya (BJP) is leading with 31,619 votes, while in Sidli Chirang, Paniram Brahma (BOPF) is leading with 36,854 votes.
