In a shocking incident in Assam's Barpeta district, a 60-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl who was on her way home from tuition classes. The girl, who was gagged and taken to the suspect's house, was later let go after the assault. As news of the incident spread, a furious mob gathered outside the suspect's home and demanded justice, eventually setting the house on fire and beating the suspect. The suspect, identified as Alif Bhuiyan, a local shopkeeper, was later rescued by the police and arrested on charges of abduction and rape. A case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and the Bharatiya Nyay Sanghita (BNS). Barapeta Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Susanta Biswa Sarma has assured that the girl has received medical care and her statement will be recorded as part of the ongoing investigation. The district administration has warned protesters not to disrupt the law-and-order situation, promising strict action against anyone attempting to disturb public order. The incident has sparked outrage in the community, with many demanding swift justice for the young victim.
