The Election Commission of India (ECI) has completed the Special Revision of the electoral roll in Assam, resulting in the removal of over 1 million names from the voter list. The exercise, held between November 22 and December 20, aimed to enhance the integrity of the electoral roll ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. The Special Revision, which did not require physical verification of documents, focused on voluntary filling of forms for new voters, objections to existing entries, and corrections. Over 29,000 Block Level Officers and 2,578 supervisors visited over 6 million households across the state. According to the ECI, the names of 478,992 individuals were removed due to deaths, 523,680 due to shifting, and 53,619 due to multiple entries. The total number of voters in Assam stands at 25.11 million, excluding 93,021 D-voters (doubtful voters with citizenship suspicions). The claims and objections phase will run until January 22, followed by the publication of the final electoral roll on February 10. To ensure accurate registration, individuals must satisfy four primary criteria: Indian citizenship, minimum age, ordinary residency, and no legal disqualification. The ECI's meticulous effort is a crucial step in maintaining the integrity of the electoral roll, particularly in Assam, where the National Register of Citizens is still being revised. The exercise demonstrates the commission's commitment to ensuring every eligible citizen is correctly registered to exercise their right to vote.
