The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to form the government in West Bengal after securing a historic mandate in the assembly polls. The oath ceremony for the new Chief Minister is scheduled to take place on May 9, the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.

BJP's Suvendu Adhikari, who defeated Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur, is among the frontrunners to be the new Chief Minister. However, Mamata Banerjee has refused to resign, claiming that she has not lost the election and that there was a "forceful attempt" to defeat her and her party Trinamool Congress.

The BJP has appointed Home Minister Amit Shah as the central observer for the election of the Chief Minister in West Bengal. The party has also alleged that Trinamool Congress supporters went on a rampage near the New Market area, destroying shops and vandalising the party office.
