In a bid to counter Trinamool Congress's claims that the Bharatiya Janata Party is anti-Bengali culture, the BJP has started projecting fish as part of its campaign in the eastern state.

BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya and two candidates have been seen eating fish on television channels, while a third nominee went campaigning with an unusually large fish.

Countering TMC's campaign, Samik Bhattacharya said, 'Can a Bengali survive without fish and mutton? Is that even possible?'

However, the move comes after a senior state BJP leader revealed that only vegetarian food was served to thousands of BJP workers who attended Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Kolkata rally in March.

The development comes months after BJP workers allegedly assaulted and made to do sit-ups by two hawkers selling chicken patties at a mass recital of Bhagavad Gita verses in Kolkata's Brigade Parade grounds.
