A dramatic confrontation unfolded in Old Delhi on Wednesday as police detained a man who claimed he was just trying to buy medicine. The incident, captured on camera, took place amidst a heavy police presence and empty streets, a day after clashes erupted over a demolition drive near Faiz-e-Elahi Masjid. The man, who claimed to be from Uttar Pradesh, alleged that he was not given a chance to leave the area and was detained despite his pleas of innocence. He told reporters that he was on his way to buy medicine when he was stopped by police. The demolition drive, which began at 1:30 am, triggered protests from local residents and sparked clashes in parts of Old Delhi. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) carried out the demolition pursuant to a high court order, citing alleged encroachment. At least five people were detained after a FIR was registered in connection with alleged stone pelting incidents. Videos showed bulldozers razing structures near the mosque, as well as tear gas shells being fired and stone pelting incidents. Madhur Verma, joint commissioner of police, stated that the demolition was carried out under the directions of the Delhi High Court, with extensive law-and-order arrangements in place to ensure a smooth drive. The area was divided into nine zones, each supervised by an officer of the rank of additional deputy commissioner of police, with over ten companies of Delhi Police and the Rapid Action Force deployed at sensitive points. The situation remains tense in parts of Old Delhi, with residents continuing to express concerns over the demolition drive. The incident highlights the complexities of the situation and the need for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing tensions.
